The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported an oil spill covering approximately 500 square meters of coastal waters in Mariveles, Bataan, on Friday, raising concerns over its environmental and public health impacts. Oil spills threaten marine life and coastal livelihoods, while exposure through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion can cause health problems, including skin irritation, nausea, and vomiting, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The DOH advised the public to avoid affected areas, keep children away, and seek medical attention if symptoms develop after exposure. The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that oil spills caused P4.93 billion in damages in 2023, accounting for 53% of total damages from human-induced disasters.
