A cyberattack on cryptocurrency exchange Binance resulted in the theft of an estimated $6.36 billion in digital assets across 10 blockchains, making it the largest cryptocurrency hack ever recorded.

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean-linked hacking group, citing both on-chain and off-chain intelligence. According to the report, the hackers gained access to Binance’s hot wallet signing infrastructure, allowing them to move funds from multiple wallets in a coordinated operation.

While Binance has confirmed a security incident and temporarily suspended withdrawals on several networks, the exchange said user funds remain safe. Meanwhile, stablecoin issuers including Tether, Circle, and Ripple have frozen roughly $2.7 billion worth of stolen assets, though attackers are believed to still control about $2.4 billion in cryptocurrency beyond recovery efforts.

The incident surpasses the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025, previously considered the largest crypto theft on record.
