Scientists have identified Teghaza 001, a meteorite discovered in Mali’s Sahara Desert in 2022, as potentially the oldest Martian meteorite found on Earth, dating back more than 4.1 billion years.
Researchers from NASA and other institutions found evidence that the rock interacted with liquid water while forming beneath the surface of ancient Mars.
The discovery offers new insights into the planet’s early environment and strengthens evidence that Mars may once have had conditions suitable for microbial life.
