Netflix is set to expand the “Stranger Things” universe with a new live-action prequel series, “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure,” scheduled to premiere in 2028. Set in the 1950s, the series will take place decades before the events of the original show and the stage play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” The project will be developed by “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer, alongside longtime series writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator, and writer. BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes. In a statement, the Duffer brothers described the project as a fresh take on the franchise, featuring a new setting, characters, heroes, and villains.
Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico, while Netflix has yet to announce the cast. The original “Stranger Things” series debuted on Netflix in 2016. Set in the 1980s, it follows the mysterious disappearance of Will Byers and the arrival of Eleven, a girl with psychokinetic abilities, as a group of friends uncover supernatural forces and government conspiracies. The series features Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, and Joe Keery, among others.
